The Crimson Choice

The Crimson Choice
A Short Story by Vasu Gangapalli

The rain had just stopped when Aria closed the last page of her vampire novel. Her fingers lingered on the cover as if it might come alive. She wasn’t just a fan—she was obsessed.

“Another sleepless night with your bloodsuckers?” laughed Ethan, her childhood friend, leaning against the doorway. His voice always carried warmth, the kind that could pull her back from her daydreams.

She smiled faintly. “They’re not just bloodsuckers, Ethan. They’re… eternal, tragic, beautiful.”

“Beautiful? They’re monsters.”

Her smile faded, though she didn’t reply. Something deep inside her resonated differently.

That night, her reflection trembled in the mirror. Her eyes burned crimson for a fleeting second. She staggered back, gasping.

No… this can’t be real.

The truth arrived faster than she expected.

A tall figure approached her in the old library the next evening. His presence pulled every strand of her attention like gravity itself. His pale face, sharp eyes, and gentle smirk seemed too familiar, as if he had walked out of her books.

“Aria,” he said, voice silky. “At last, we meet.”

She froze. “How do you… know my name?”

“Because you are one of us. Half of us, at least. Daughter of Selene, my sister.”

Her heart pounded. “No. My mother was—”

“Human?” He chuckled. “Not entirely. You are half-vampire, Aria. That’s why you’ve always felt… different.”

When she told Ethan, he laughed in disbelief. “This is insane. He’s manipulating you. Aria, you’re human. Stay with me. We’ll figure this out together.”

But the vampire, Adrian, whispered differently. “You’ve always yearned for more, haven’t you? To live beyond time, to never fade. I see the hunger in you.”

His eyes locked with hers, and for a moment, she wanted to surrender.

Days passed in torment. Ethan brought her coffee, made her laugh, grounded her. Adrian appeared at night, speaking of eternity, passion, and power.

Her dreams split in two—one filled with warm sunlit mornings, the other with crimson nights.

“Why can’t I choose both?” she whispered one night, trembling in Adrian’s arms.

“Because the night demands everything,” Adrian murmured, brushing his lips across her wrist.

The final moment came when her body began to weaken, her half-blood tearing her apart. She had to choose—drink the crimson chalice Adrian offered and become fully vampire, or let Ethan’s embrace keep her mortal until her human fragility consumed her.

Ethan held her hand, tears brimming. “Aria, please. Stay. Be with me. We’ll fight this.”

Adrian’s gaze pierced into her. “Or embrace your truth. Be eternal. Be with me.”

Aria’s chest tightened, torn between the warmth of one love and the burning desire of the other. She looked at Ethan, then at Adrian.

Her lips trembled. “I can’t deny it anymore. I was born for the night.”

She lifted the chalice, drank deeply. Her veins ignited, her heart thundered, then slowed.

When her eyes opened, they glowed a fierce crimson. Adrian smiled, victorious.

Ethan stumbled back, shattered. “You’ve… chosen him.”

“No,” Aria whispered, her voice sharp but soft. “I’ve chosen myself.”

The moon hung low, its silver light spilling over the deserted churchyard where Ethan stood frozen. His eyes burned with betrayal and sorrow, watching Aria’s new crimson glow.

“Aria…” his voice cracked. “You’ve chosen the night over me.”

She stepped closer, her movements now graceful, predatory yet heartbreakingly tender. “No, Ethan. I chose truth. But that doesn’t mean I’ve let go of you.”

He shook his head. “I don’t belong in your world.”

Her hand rose to his cheek, cold yet soft. “Then let me bring you into mine.”

Ethan’s breath caught. “You mean… turn me?”

Her eyes shimmered, torn between hunger and love. “I don’t want to lose you. Eternity is lonely, Ethan. I don’t want to walk it without you by my side.”

Adrian, who had been silent, laughed bitterly. “Humans always ruin everything. He’ll never survive the change. He’s too fragile.”

Aria shot him a glare. “Do not underestimate love.”

Ethan stepped back, his heart racing. He remembered the warmth of their childhood, the way she laughed at his silly jokes, the comfort of being human. But when he looked into her crimson eyes, he saw the same Aria—afraid, passionate, desperate not to be alone.

“Ethan,” she whispered, holding out her hand. “Say yes, and I’ll make sure eternity is ours.”

Silence stretched, broken only by the rustling leaves.

He finally spoke, voice trembling. “I love you, Aria. I’ve always loved you. But this… this is forever. I’m terrified.”

Her lips quivered. “So am I. But love is worth the risk.”

With tears in his eyes, Ethan stepped forward, pressing his forehead to hers. “Then do it. Give me eternity.”

Aria’s fangs descended, gleaming in the moonlight. For a moment, she hesitated—fearful of destroying the man she loved. But Ethan’s hand gripped hers firmly, steadying her.

She sank her fangs gently into his neck. His gasp echoed, half in pain, half in surrender. Crimson flowed, their heartbeats syncing, their bond sealing in a way no vow could capture.

When it was over, Ethan staggered, his veins glowing faintly, his eyes shifting from hazel to a deep, smoldering red. He looked at her, dazed but alive.

Aria smiled through tears. “You chose me.”

He touched her cheek, now just as cold as his. “No, Aria. I chose us.”

Adrian sighed, almost amused. “Foolish, but perhaps… beautiful.”

As dawn threatened the horizon, Aria and Ethan stood hand in hand, shadows stretching long and endless. They were no longer bound to fleeting days or fragile bodies. They had stepped into eternity together.

For the first time, Aria didn’t feel torn between two worlds. She had both—her truth, and her love.
