Grushmeshwar
A Tale from Indian Mythology
Retold by Vasu Gangapalli

Long ago, in the sacred lands of southern India, there lived a noble Brahmin named Sudharma and his wife Sudeha. They were known for their kindness, wisdom, and devotion to the divine. Their home was filled with peace and prosperity, yet one sorrow quietly shadowed their lives—they had no children.

Years passed, and the absence of a child slowly weighed upon Sudeha’s heart. She prayed, fasted, and sought blessings from sages and temples, but destiny remained silent.

The longing for motherhood grew stronger with each passing day.

One evening, after deep thought, Sudeha approached her husband.

“My dear,” she said softly, “I wish to ask something of you. But first, promise me you will grant my request.”

Sudharma looked at her with concern.

“What is it that troubles you?” he asked gently.

“First, promise me,” she insisted, extending her hand.

Sudharma hesitated, sensing the seriousness in her voice. Yet, trusting his wife, he placed his hand over hers.

“I promise,” he said. “Now tell me what you desire.”

Sudeha took a deep breath.

“You know how long we have prayed for a child, yet our prayers have gone unanswered. I have thought deeply about this. I want you to marry my younger sister, Grushma. Through her, our family may finally be blessed with a child.”

Sudharma stepped back in shock.

“Sudeha… how can you ask this of me?” he said. “I cannot do such a thing.”

But Sudeha reminded him firmly, “You have already given me your word.”

Sudharma fell silent.

After a long pause, he asked quietly, “And do you believe your sister will agree to such a marriage?”

Sudeha smiled faintly.

“Leave that to me,” she said. “I will speak to her.”

When Sudeha explained everything to her sister Grushma, the young woman agreed out of respect for her elder sister and her desire to bring happiness to the family.

Thus, Grushma married Sudharma and became part of their household.

Grushma was not only gentle and kind, but also deeply devoted to Lord Shiva. Her faith was unwavering.

Every morning before sunrise, she would prepare one hundred and one small Shiva Lingas from clay. With pure devotion, she worshipped them with flowers, water, and sacred chants. After completing her prayers, she would walk to the nearby pond and carefully immerse the Lingas in its still waters.

Day after day, she performed this ritual with humility and faith.

Time passed, and by the grace of Lord Shiva, a miracle finally blessed their home.
Grushma gave birth to a beautiful baby boy.
Sudharma’s heart overflowed with joy, for the dream he had cherished for so many years had finally come true. Grushma too was filled with gratitude and love for the child.
But not everyone shared their happiness.
Slowly, a dark feeling began to grow within Sudeha’s heart.

Jealousy.

She began to feel that her husband loved Grushma and the child more than he loved her.

One day she confronted Sudharma.

“I see how much you care for Grushma and her son,” she said bitterly. “You are closer to them than you are to me.”

Sudharma looked at her with sadness.
“That is not true,” he replied gently. “You are mistaken. I care for all of you equally.”
But Sudeha’s jealousy only deepened.

“It was your wish that I marry your sister,” Sudharma reminded her calmly. “We are one family now.”

Yet the poison of envy had already taken root in her heart.

One fateful night, when darkness covered the village and all were asleep, Sudeha committed a terrible act.

Blinded by jealousy, she killed Grushma’s young son and secretly threw his lifeless body into the pond where Grushma performed her daily worship.

The next morning, the villagers discovered the child’s body floating in the water. The entire household was plunged into grief.
Cries of sorrow filled the air.

But amidst the chaos, Grushma remained calm.

She did not scream. She did not curse fate.
Instead, she continued her prayers to Lord Shiva with unwavering devotion.

“It is Lord Shiva who blessed me with this child,” she said with quiet faith. “And it is Lord Shiva who will protect him.”

With folded hands, she began chanting the sacred name of Shiva.

Her faith did not waver even for a moment.
Later that day, as she walked to the pond to immerse the Shiva Lingas she had worshipped, something miraculous happened.

Suddenly, she saw her son running towards her.

Alive.

Smiling.

Grushma fell to her knees and embraced him tightly as tears streamed down her face.
“Mother,” the boy said softly, wiping her tears with his tiny fingers, “please do not cry. I will never leave you again.”

At that very moment, the sky seemed to glow with divine radiance.

Lord Shiva himself appeared before her.
“Grushma,” he said, his voice echoing like thunder yet filled with compassion, “your devotion has pleased me greatly. I know of the cruel act committed by your sister Sudeha, and I shall punish her for it.”

But Grushma immediately folded her hands.
“My Lord,” she said humbly, “please forgive my sister. Do not punish her.”

Lord Shiva looked at her with deep admiration.

“Such compassion, even towards one who has wronged you,” he said. “Your devotion and forgiveness are greater than any punishment.”

“Because of your noble heart, I shall forgive her.”

Then Lord Shiva spoke again.

“Ask for a boon, my child. Whatever you desire shall be granted.”

Grushma bowed before the Lord.

“My Lord,” she said, “if you are truly pleased with my devotion, then I ask only this—please reside here forever in the form of a Jyotirlinga, and may the world remember your presence here by my name.”

Lord Shiva raised his hand in blessing.
“So be it.”

At that sacred moment, the divine light of Shiva manifested there as the holy Jyotirlinga of Grushmeshwar.

The pond where the miracle took place came to be known as Shivalaya.

And to this day, devotees believe that the sacred presence of Lord Grushmeshwar Jyotirlinga continues to bless all those who visit that holy place with faith in their hearts.
