From the minds behind Barbarian comes Companion—a twisty, edge-of-the-seat thriller that’s best experienced with minimal knowledge going in. In fact, I strongly recommend skipping the trailer altogether, as it gives away a crucial early reveal that would’ve hit harder if left unspoiled.

What begins as a seemingly straightforward plot quickly unravels into a layered psychological drama. The story explores how people wear masks—both in real life and onscreen—never truly revealing who they are. Jack Quaid delivers a strong performance, starting off as a charming, almost too-perfect presence, only to slowly peel back into something far more disturbing. His transformation is unsettling and brilliantly done.

Sophie Thatcher is the soul of the film. She carries the emotional weight with remarkable conviction, and her character’s journey defines the movie’s tone and moral compass. First-time director Drew Hancock, backed by Barbarian director Zach Cregger as producer, delivers a confident debut. The pacing is tight, the tension is unrelenting, and the twists come fast and hard—this is storytelling with bite.

Eli Born’s cinematography deserves special mention. It’s sleek, intentional, and draws your eye to subtle details that gain importance in hindsight. It’s the kind of film that practically demands a second viewing to fully appreciate the layers you might miss the first time.

With shades of Black Mirror and echoes of Get Out, Companion is a cleverly crafted thriller that pulls no punches. Dark, smart, and emotionally intense—this one should definitely be on your watchlist.
