I have often spoken about my writing inspirations—the great poets and authors who influenced me in my younger years. But I realize I missed acknowledging one of my greatest publishing inspirations: Anant Pai, fondly remembered as Uncle Pai of Tinkle and Amar Chitra Katha.

When I first began sending out my short stories, I faced rejection after rejection. My father even felt I was wasting my time chasing something so uncertain. Yet, what kept me going were the little gems of encouragement that came with each rejection letter from Uncle Pai. He would share inspiring anecdotes—like the story of Bruce and the Spider—that reminded me never to give up.

It was this steady encouragement, combined with my own persistence, that helped me keep trying. Finally, my first short story was published—ironically, soon after my father’s passing. In that moment, I felt it wasn’t just my determination at work, but also the blessings of my father from above and the guidance of Uncle Pai that gave me strength.

My second story didn’t just get published—it won the Best Story Prize, awarded by Uncle Pai himself. That remains one of the most cherished milestones of my journey as a writer.

For all this and more, I will always remember Uncle Pai with deep admiration, gratitude, and respect. 🙏
