A Gritty, Unflinching Thriller Based on a Shocking True Story

Stolen, an Amazon Prime Original directed by Karan Tejpal, is a rare gem in Bollywood’s recent landscape—bold, impactful, and impossible to ignore. Inspired by the real-life Karbi Anglong lynching incident of 2018, the film explores the horrifying consequences of misinformation and mob violence.

The story revolves around Nilotpal Das and Abhijit Nath—names fictionalized in the film—who find themselves in the middle of a nightmarish situation. A false WhatsApp rumor about child abductors spreads like wildfire, leading to a senseless and terrifying mob attack. The way this mob violence is portrayed feels disturbingly real and deeply unsettling.

One of the film’s strongest elements is Abhishek Banerjee’s performance. Known for his comic roles in the Stree universe, Banerjee delivers what could easily be the best performance of his career. He plays the elder brother, initially careless and dismissive, a character we dislike at first—but who gradually earns our respect through a compelling arc of redemption.

When his younger brother Raman arrives at the railway station, a baby gets mysteriously stolen, throwing everyone into chaos. The child belongs to Jhumpa, a poor woman sleeping on a bench, and had the brothers not intervened, the police may have unfairly pinned the blame on her. Raman’s insistence on helping her and standing up for what is right adds a strong moral layer to the story.

The film moves at a breakneck pace with not a single dull moment. It grips you with its realism, emotional intensity, and powerful social commentary. Stolen is not just a film—it’s a wake-up call. One that holds a mirror to society, reminding us of the dangers of blind rage and digital misinformation.
