This one is not what it seems to be. Also that it is based on the story by Edgar Allan Poe makes it interesting. Actually, it was his name associated with this movie which made me watch it. I wasn’t disappointed. I like thrillers set in those times, an era gone by. The movie has slow pace…I feel 19th and 20th century mental asylums were terrifying places, but thankfully this movie doesn’t go deep into it. The major plus points are the setting of the asylum, good writing and good performances. The plot twist towards the end took this movie many notches above. Edward Newgate has just graduated medical school and takes a job at a mental institution. When he gets to know his fellow doctors he isn’t sure what to think. He starts discovering secrets one by one. The twists were perfect and were placed at the right point of the movie. It wasn’t as spooky as it would have been meant to be. However, everything else adds up to make it a good thriller. Also it has good star cast which includes the beautiful Kate Beckinsale, Ben Kingsley, David Thewlis, Micheal Caine and Jim Sturgess.
